Why did America colonized the Philippines during 1899?

They knew that they were facing a fierce battle if not through physical force but through the definite strong determination of the natives. They can use us in myriad of ways as has been proven by the thousand of Filipinos that died in both WWI and WWII, I should know since my dad and 2 uncles were US Scouts and USNavy veterans.
