Is it bad luck to have only one Fu Dog?

It is bad luck to only have one Foo Dog displayed. You must have a Male (the one holding the ball) and a female (one holding the cub). Looking at the entrance of a doorway, hall, ect.... the female should be on the left and the male on the right. Hope this helps you out.
