Truth be spoken. Left to its own devices, there is nothing immortal about the soul and the spirit does have the possibility of immortality.

In a way, both can achieve immortality. This is how it works. When you die, God stores your individuality or soul within His memory. (He can do this because He's God.) How you lived your life depends on your spirit of intent or what's in your heart. God sees and judges everything about you as you live the choices you make based on what's in your heart or spirit.

If you chose to do good for others, God knows. If you chose to do bad for selfish reasons, He too knows. Based on His standards, we all fall short, but thanks to Jesus for interceding on our behalf, we all have a chance for immortality in new glorified bodies, bodies which may or may not fall short of His standards: (even then we still have the freedom to chose good or bad but without the influence of our present flawed bodies.) All we have to do is learn the truth about Him and at least try to live it.

Jesus said, "Love God your father with your whole heart and love your neighbor as yourself." Simply put, don't be self-centered and care about others as you care about yourself. if you can do this, then you are one step closer to loving God and His kingdom. Nothing more . . . nothing less.

If you want to know what's keeping us alive and why? That is simple, the Holy Spirit. Acts chapter five should give you some insight on the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit. God giveth God taketh away.
