How do you get to be chief of a tribe in the prehistory?

Most tribes had groups of elders and wisemen and not one "chief". The elders because of life experience and wisemen who were younger but had exhibited great insight and potential. Shamen were walking pharmacies, keeping track of plants, doses, combined effects, side effects etc.
