In 1935, the only Hispanic U.S. senator was Dennis Chávez from New Mexico. He was the first Hispanic senator in U.S. history, serving from 1935 to 1962. Chávez was a member of the Democratic Party and was known for his advocacy on behalf of civil rights and social justice issues.
