What was the first graphic novel?

The first Maus graphic novel was released in 1980. Art Spiegelman wrote the series based on stories his father told him as a Holocaust Survivor. Spiegelman created the graphic novel at first being released as an insert in an independent art and graphics magazine, then, in 1991, it was released as a graphic novel. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1992.
