Why is it summer in the U.S when it is winter in Australia?

Because the Earth's axis of spin is tilted as compared to the plane in which it orbits the Sun. In the US summer the tilt causes the US to face the Sun more and Australia to be pointed away from the Sun. The strength of the Sun's energy drives the seasons.
