What do the Sirens symbolize in The Odyssey?

They are mythological creatures that lure sailors into the sea to drown, or cause wrecks upon the cliffs to reach them. They were used to explain why some ships and men often did not come home from sea voyages, or were lost, or why wrecks were found with no crew.
