How can you repair the temperature gage that stopped working on 1989 Mazda 323?

It is probably just the sensor. The sensor will be on the head or around the thermostat housing. If you ground the wire attached to the sensor to the head, the gauge should go to hot when you turn the key on to the Run position. That will confirm that the sensor is bad and you just replace it.
