A crozier is the ceremonial staff of an abbot or bishop, crooked at the end like a shepherd's croock, symbolizing the pastoral nature of his responsibilities to his 'flock'. This staff would be carried by ahighly trusted member of the abbey or bishopric, and the description of the carrier himself moved to 'crozier' itself sometime during the Dark Ages.
