The most immediate effect, in March, 1918 was the withdrawal of Russia from the war, ending the Eastern Front and freeing up some 50 German divisions for the Western Front. These German reinforcements to the west could have tipped the balance in favor of the Central Powers had the United States by 1918 not been contributing 10,000 fresh troops a day to the war.
