If you have an iphone or an iPod Touch, you will need iTunes in order to transfer music, videos and apps between your computer and your iPod. However, you can purchase music and apps (anything less than 10 megs) directly through the iphone and iPod Touch (this may change with the 3.0 firmware; I'm still a little shaky on that).

If you have most other models of iPod, you can use alternative media applications like Winamp, Amarok, etc. to transfer music and videos between your computer and your iPod, but you will still need iTunes to update or restore the firmware on your device.
