A credit card is in effect - a short-term 'loan' from the card company so you can buy products, services etc instantly without having to save up. The card company charges interest on your purchases unless you repay the outstanding balance before the due date.
A debit card on the other hand - is a form of 'electronic' cash linked directly to a bank account. You can only use it to make purchases if you already have the cash in your account.
