A:The Canaanites were a West Semitic people who settled throughout most of Palestine, although the hinterland was for the most part only sparsely populated. At times, there is evidence of increased settlement in the hinterland, with Jericho a well-known city from antiquity, but repeatedly abandoned whenever life on the richer coastal plains and valleys was more attractive. Jericho was abandoned prior to 1500 BCE and not rebuilt until the Israelite era.

Until the 1970s, it was generally accepted that the Canaanite hinterland was invaded by Hebrews, whether at the end of a biblical Exodus from Egypt or from elsewhere outside the area. The consensus of scholars is now that the Hebrews were actually Canaanites themselves, and that they migrated from the main area of settlement at a time of economic decline, taking advantage of new technology that made life in the arid, mountainous hinterland more viable.
