How do you care for a philodendron that has what looks like silvery slime and chew marks on the leaves?

This sounds like you may have snails coming in to chew, try getting some snail pellets from a hardware store, water plant, sprinkle a handful around the soil and see if you come up with dead snail in a day or two.
