What happened to the assassin of Garfield?

His name was Charles J. Guiteau. He was taken into custody immediately after the shooting. After Garfield died, Guiteau was tried in Washington, DC. Guiteau directed his own defense and pleaded insanity. He also claimed that Garfield's death was not caused by his bullet but by the doctors who treated him. He was convicted on January 25, 1882 and executed by hanging on June 30.
