Why did dish network become so famous?

Dish could have become famous for a variety of reasons. In 2005, the company was in the news after a city in Texas renamed itself "Dish". Another reason Dish was highly publicized was due to its exclusion of very popular channels including AMC and IFC. Dish has also released a popular DVR product, which could have lead to its fame.
