What did Kenneth Grahame do before he wrote books?

Before Kenneth Grahame became an author he wanted to go to Oxford University but he wasn't allowed due to the cost so instead he went to work at the bank of England in 1979 and rose through the ranks until retiring as it's Secretary in 1908 due to ill health.
