The Holocaust began in earnest in 1941, following the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, which marked the start of mass shootings and the establishment of extermination camps. However, anti-Semitic policies and persecution of Jews began earlier under Nazi rule, starting with Adolf Hitler's rise to power in 1933. The systematic genocide of six million Jews, along with millions of others deemed undesirable, continued until the end of World War II in 1945.
