Despite Grant's capture of both Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, critics wanted someone to blame for the massive losses on both sides with no visible area gained. After the Battle of Shiloh, many newspapers were not happy with Grant's decision to leave his troops bivouacked and not entrenched. His command was transferred Gen. George Thomas and he was humiliated by being made second in command.
