The Union had advantages in manpower, including an influx of immigrants who could be conscroited to fight to nullify the 10th Amendment and kkep the Hamiltonian-Carey mode;l of tariffs verses the Confederate demand for Adam Smit style free trade.( There were 5 Union slave States, rthat did not eancipate their slaves until 1865, so the war was not just about slavery it was federalism and the power of washington SDC over the states) The union had a navy capable of enforcing a blockade and stopping cotton exports, and iron, railroad and industrial capacity so there weree able to replace soldiers with immigrants and weapons and logistical supplies from factories in their quest to nullify and abrogate the 10th Amendment and insure America became a monolithic federal leviathan like the nation states of Europe. Incidentally , Abraham Lincoln was a corresponding friend of Karl Marx, via Hoorace greely, and implemented 7 of 10 of Marx's principles of the Kommunist Manifesto.
