The workhouse system underwent several administrative reforms--some of which were brought about by Charles Dickens and his fellow activists--but was not officially abolished until 1st April 1930; it was replaced by other social legislation for the unemployed and retired. Despite abolition, many workhouses continued into the 1950s under the local County Council.
