What is difference between Ambien and Ambien CR?

Ambien (zolpidem) is a simple dose. The "CR" designates a timed release. The idea is that zolpidem enters and leaves the system quickly, so some people fall asleep fast and wake up quickly. The CR dosage is released over time, intended to give the patient about 8 hours of sleep.
