Why do guys have long nails?

It's often referred to as a "pimp nail" or "coke nail". There appear to be some other cultural reasons (Chinese used to do it as a sign of not needing to do manual labor). Other people report keeping a long nail to scratch, pick their nose, and dig in their ears. In recent history, however, the most immediate connotation is that the person either uses cocaine, is in actuality a pimp, or wants to portray the image of one or the other (blindly following hip hop culture).
