There are a number of reasons:

  1. Older people are generally less active.
  2. They stop going outside to play, but they keep eating the same amount of (or more) food.
  3. Many work sitting at a desk for 8-10 hours a day
  4. Inactivity leads to reduced lean body mass (less muscle). Muscle burns more calories at rest than fat. So you don't want to lose that muscle - get active!
  5. Injury may prevent exercise.
  6. They eat too much.
  7. They eat too much.
  8. Metabolism may slow down.
  9. They eat too much.

A simple fix is to eat less to offset the reduced calorie expenditure associated with living a sedentary lifestyle. Count your calories for a week - you may be surprised just how much you are overeating each day...
