What does a train whistle represent?

The train whistle is a functional item of no specific shape and it does not represent anything. The train whistle on the locomotive by the engineer is used as a warning and and a signaling device. Some caboose cars were also equipped with whistles, and the conductor would use them when the train was being pushed for the same purposes.
