How did Honda Tohru's mother die in Fruits Basket?

She died when a car hit her. Kyo was watching but couldn't save her because he would've turned into a cat in front of everyone. While she lay dying, she said 'I won't forgive you' but she was died before she could say '....if you do not protect Tohru.'
