What is the purpose for the piano?

The original purpose of the piano was two not exactly replace the harpsichord but to give composers and players more to work with dynamically and playing wise. Since the harpsichord was so fragile it soon was blown away by the piano. Today the piano is a very popular instrument to play and very enjoyable to listen to.
