10 teaspoons of sugar in a can of coke.

10 teaspoons of sugar in a can of Apple juice. (sugar levels can vary in fruit juices)

8 teaspoons of sugar in a can of Orange Juice. (sugar levels can vary in fruit juices)

However the type of sugar is different. Coke has sucrose, while fruit juices have various sugars, but mostly fructose. Sucrose and glucose can cause blood sugar swings which can lead to emotional disturbances, hyperactivity or obesity (depending on your body type). Sucrose and glucose also put a strain on your pancreas which can lead to type 2 Diabetes. Fructose does none of these things as it is converted into glycogen and stored in the liver and released gradually when needed. Fruit is the natural source of sugar our body's were designed for, however we are consuming fructose in unprecedented quantities and recent concerns have emerged about the role of fructose in obesity and the development of metabolic syndrome. The debate about fructose and possible harmful effects has medical, scientific, commercial and political dimensions, and a simple recommendation cannot be made here.
