Hernan Cortes conquered the Aztec Empire in present-day Mexico. The Aztecs were ruled by Emperor Moctezuma II at the time of the Spanish conquest in the early 16th century. Cortes' forces eventually overthrew the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan in 1521.
