Sharecropping often trapped Black farmers in a cycle of debt and exploitation. They were required to give a significant portion of their crop yields to landowners, leaving them with little to sustain their families. Additionally, the system was rife with unfair practices, such as inflated prices for supplies and arbitrary assessments of crop value, making it nearly impossible for sharecroppers to achieve financial independence. This system perpetuated economic dependency and reinforced systemic racism in the post-Civil War South.
