Serine has a neutral polar side chain capable of forming hydrogen bonds. Lysine has a basic

side chain, and aspartic acid has an acidic side chain, both of which can form salt bridges as

well as hydrophilic interactions. Although polar amino acids can be found inside a folded

protein structure, they are more likely to be found around the outside where the protein is in

contact with water.
