Serine has a neutral polar side chain capable of forming hydrogen bonds. Lysine has a basic
side chain, and aspartic acid has an acidic side chain, both of which can form salt bridges as
well as hydrophilic interactions. Although polar amino acids can be found inside a folded
protein structure, they are more likely to be found around the outside where the protein is in
contact with water.
