How much energy does wind contribute in the United States?

Not as much as it will someday. It depends on who you talk to. Folks who are strongly in favor of it say it is already up to 5%. Folks on the other side of the issue say it actually costs more to produce than it is worth. Here is what I know to be true. The potential is there for sure to someday see a great deal of power generated by these wind turbines but, as of today, they still have not found a reliable lubricant for those giant bearings and the failure rate is excessive. I'm told that the maintenance costs on the current generation of wind turbines almost completely devours the money saved by using them to create energy. So, hang in there. They will get it right. But for now, it isn't the great savior it was hoped it would be.
