As the first President of the US under the new Constitution, Washington realized that the country would face challenges both at home and abroad. After mediating many disputes during the Continental Convention, he understood the positions of the various states on key issues of the time. He led the move to establish a national capital separate from any city or state. He appointed Cabinet members to address problems within the fledgling nation. With the help of his fellow Founding Fathers, he negotiated treaties with Europe and delayed further conflict with the British over international commerce. By establishing that the US would not become embroiled in the continual European wars, he bought time for the US to become strong and independent.
