Teddy Roosevelt was not an Eagle Scout or even a scout as a youth. It is fun to speculate that he embodied many of the principles that scouts hold dear and that he had the outdoorsmanship to be an Eagle scout, however, he was already an adult when the scouts were formed.

He was an ardent booster of scouting, serving as a troop committeeman of Troop 39 in Oyster Bay, New York, and first council commissioner of Nassau County Council. He was elected honorary vice president of the Boy Scouts of America and was the first and only man designated as Chief Scout Citizen. For many years after his death in 1919, several thousand Scouts and leaders in the New York area made annual pilgrimages to his grave in Oyster Bay.
