A microtubule organization center (MTOC) is a cellular structure that serves as the primary site for the nucleation and organization of microtubules, which are critical components of the cytoskeleton. The most well-known MTOC is the centrosome, which consists of a pair of centrioles surrounded by pericentriolar material. MTOCs play a crucial role in cell division, maintaining cell shape, and intracellular transport by organizing microtubules into specific arrangements. In addition to centrosomes, other structures such as spindle poles and basal bodies can also function as MTOCs.
