How were the Quakers and how did they make a living?

Quakers, who are members of the Religious Society of Friends, hold jobs just like everyone else. In many cases these jobs are held for reasons of social conscience, but their belief that everything one does should be done in a way that is honorable before God led to them being viewed as honest businesspersons and honest workers. Historically, in a world a century or more ago before a "Better Business Bureau" existed, dealing with a Quaker was a way to make sure you got goods that were of good quality at a price that was fair and that the goods would not knowingly have been created on the backs of others less fortunate (i.e.: slave labour). This policy and good business sense made some Quakers wealthy (but certainly not all of them). However, it is often said today in Quaker historical circles that "The Quakers came to America to do good, and they did well".

So how did Quakers make money? The same way as everyone else, but especially with an eye open toward the social consequences of their work.
