Soap is made with fatty acids.
Actually there are 2 types of product sold as "soap", neither of them is either acid nor alkali:
- conventional soap is an organo-metallic salt formed by the chemical reaction of fatty acids with lye, in a process called saponification. if not prepared correctly this can have leftover unreacted fatty acids or lye which can irritate or even burn the skin in the case of lye. sold only in solid form.
- detergents, sold in either solid or liquid form.
