When did the custom of sending Christmas cards to friends appear?

In US people were exchanging Christmas cards in person early on in the country's history.They start sending cards through mail when US mail originated in 1792. In 1822 people send so many cards that Superintendent sent a petition to congress to limit the number of cards that can be sent by mail.
