Why is the theme of freedom important in literature?

Common literary themes usually come from the trials and tribulations of everyday living. In literature, people are often struggling for freedom - freedom from slavery, freedom from poverty, freedom from a violent environment, freedom from oppression, or freedom from standards or expectations.

On a more light-hearted level, sometimes characters are rebelling against societal norms, parents or other authority figures, or individual freedoms from mental chains.
