In the movie Prince Caspian why did peter have Edmund challenge Trumpkin to a swordfight instead of himself?

Victory wouldn't taste as sweet if the High King bet his subjects. To symbolise how strong their reign was, Peter had Edmund, the younger of the two, challenge Trumpkin instead.
