What do you do to tap water before you place the fish in?

When you put tap water in you need to buy water conditioner. Put the water in, then the water conditioner, and then they fish. You can buy water conditioner at most pet stores. The best thing to do though, is to get a pitcher that has a filter so the water will already be filtered. Although the water is filter you still need water conditioner.
