What is the definition of consul?

A Roman counsul was one of the two highest ranking magistrates. He served for one year as did all the other officials and had various powers. He could convene meetings of the senate, raise and lead armies, allow or disallow debates on issues. The years of the republic were named after the two men who served as counsuls. In public they were accompanied by twelve lictores.
