Trolley Buses ( rubber tires) and pre-determined routes, but no tracks, are still in use in a variety of European cities, and for some reason were and are very popular in the Former Soviet Union, sometimes articulated for greater capacity. there are rumors the Swiss (flywheel) or motor-generator trolley buses, which were very scientific in using motor-generator sets to keep the ball rolling, as it were and required recharging only at special charging stops, thus dispensing with continuous catenary or Overhead as it is also known- they had three prongs on the retractable power pick-up and were widely written up around l954 in Popular Mechanics-type magazines. I do not know if these energy-wise vehicles are still in service.
