  1. The dramatic heroine usually a heiress
  2. The dashing hero usually of noble descent but impoverished
  3. The nefarious antagonist, not evil, usually and old man with unromantic interest in the heroine.
  4. The cold disinterested relatives of the heroine who have plans for her contrary to her true interests
  5. The dark ancient vile evil presence of metaphysical form and being.
  6. The simple innocent and basically good servants who do a lot of quivering in fear.
  7. The evil servants who betray the trust of their employers to serve the greater evil.
  8. Large, extensive estates, with massive building made mostly of stone that may or may not be sentient.
