Who were the south vietnamese that helped communist and fought US troops?

If they were members of the NORTH Vietnamese Army they were called NVA or November Victor Alpha over the radio. If they were the irregular(s) Viet Cong guerrillas in the south they were called Victor Charlie over the radio or just "Charlie" for short.
