Can you use lutalyse on a dog?

Lutalyse, a brand named product of a synthetic Prostaglandin PGF2 alpha, is not labeled for use in dogs by the US FDA. This means it can not be administered to dogs as a general rule. It may be administered to a specific dog by, or under the guidance of, a licensed veterinary as an "extra-label" use.

It will not be effective as a lutealytic agent to cause a dog to "come in to season". Dogs are seasonal, and only form a follicle and ovulate occasionally. Triggering estrus is more complicated in seasonal animals like canines, than in non-seasonal species like bovines in which regression of a 5 day mature corpus luteum will often cause ovulation and estrus.

Lutalyse is an effective abortifacient drug in canines and can be used to terminate pregnancy. However, it has more severe side effects in canines than other species, and has a much more prolonged and specific injection protocol than other species.
