Who invented the handicapped sign?

The internationally used handicapped logo was designed by Larry McAteer, of Rockville Centre, New York in 1973.

The design was created as part of the Annual Report for a local hospital.

For one section of the report, Larry chose to design a symbol for Outpatient Care. This symbol was picked up from the Annual Report and eventually became an international symbol and the sign has benefited millions of people worldwide.

The International Symbol of Access (ISA), also known as the (International) Wheelchair Symbol, consists of a blue squareoverlaid in white with a stylized image of a person using a wheelchair. It is maintained as an international standard, ISO 7001, and a copyrighted image of the International Commission on Technology and Accessibility (ICTA), a committee of Rehabilitation International.[1] It was designed by Susanne Koefoed in 1968.
