Which auto battery terminal to take off first?

When disconnecting a car battery, always remove the negative terminal first. This is usually marked with a minus sign (-) and is typically black. Removing the negative terminal first helps prevent any electrical short circuits, as it disconnects the battery's ground. After the negative terminal is removed, you can safely take off the positive terminal, marked with a plus sign (+) and often red.
