Where is glycocalyx located?

The glycocalyx is located on the outer surface of the plasma membrane of eukaryotic cells. It consists of glycoproteins and glycolipids that extend into the extracellular space, forming a protective layer. This structure plays a crucial role in cell-cell recognition, adhesion, and communication, as well as providing a barrier against pathogens. In certain organisms, such as bacteria, a glycocalyx may also be found as a capsule surrounding the cell wall.
